History of Atlantic
Inspection Services, Inc.
-
Atlantic Inspection
Services of Metro Washington, Inc. (“AIS”) was incorporated on
March 7, 1994 at 9:10 am. Brian Keeler and Larry Barley – both with extensive construction
experience, formed AIS.
-
Henry “Jay” McCarthy had started Atlantic Inspection Services in
Reisterstown, Maryland a short period of time earlier. Originally
intending to merge their resources and knowledge together under
the Atlantic Inspection Services name it became clear that a
separate entity would better serve all of those involved.
-
Other “branches”
were formed in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida – but these
remained independently owned and operated by friends and
relatives. Over time, Larry relocated to Southern Maryland and Jay
to Florida. This left Brian to develop and formulate the direction
of AIS. Communication between Jay, Larry and Brian occurs
regularly.
-
Since 1994, AIS has experienced many changes in the real estate
market. A hot buyer’s market with an active relocation market is
what AIS “cut its teeth on”. This was a great market to start in
since the sellers were willing to do almost anything to close the
sale and the relocation market provided a steady stream of business.
-
Both events
contributed to the inspection reports being very thorough and clear
– especially when it came to relocation inspections since another
inspector typically would perform another inspection for the
purchaser within a matter of weeks.
-
Over time the market
changed and homes sold in a matter of days or weeks instead several
months. This caused the demise of the inspection business for the
relocation industry. From this experience AIS was positioned to
provide the inspection to satisfy your needs.
-
Handwritten reports
were replaced with computer generated typewritten reports in October
of 2000. Even with the added benefit of typewritten reports they
continue to be provided on site at the completion of the
inspection. From the comments, recommendations and suggestions
provided to the inspection report software company, Palm-Tech, Brian
was asked to join the Beta Testing Team.
-
Well over 50
revisions have been made during Brian’s involvement, which continues
to this day. Brian is also asked to speak with inspectors around the
country who are looking for input regarding the software and its
different features.
-
From the very
beginning Brian has been involved with ASHI (The American Society of
Home Inspectors) the oldest and most recognized organization of
private inspectors and the local chapter – MAC-ASHI – The
Mid-Atlantic Chapter of ASHI. Brian was ASHI certified in 1999 –
having completed the required fee paid inspections and passing both
3-hour exams on the first attempt.
-
With over 25 years of
construction experience and an ongoing involvement with ASHI –
including an annual requirement of 18 MRC’s (Membership Renewal
Credits) to maintain ASHI membership – Brian has honed his
inspection skills. The result is an inspection report that is full
of useful information, easy to understand and typically provides the
client with options to address the issues reported on.
-
Brian has also passed
the exam and been certified for Radon Gas Testing by the EPA and the
current private entities – NEHA (National Environmental Health
Association) and The NRSB (National Radon Safety Board) overseeing
the NRPP (National Radon Proficiency Program) for the United States.
Sixteen hours of training are required every other year to maintain
this certification – which Brian has held since 1997.
-
Brian has also been
an MDE (Maryland Department of the Environment) certified collector
of water samples for laboratory testing and attended the first
seminar required in Maryland – held in July, 1999 – for the
inspection of private/on-site sanitary systems.
-
Brian’s BS in Biology
from George
Washington
University and additional training have made him a Certified
Environmental Specialist (CES), a Certified Mold Specialist (CMS)
and a Certified Mold Inspector (CMI) by the Environmental Assessment
Association Board of Directors.
-
Brian has completed
numerous construction related courses as well as taught courses in
Construction Blueprint Reading and Surveying. He has also
successfully completed the 94 hours of classroom training required
for Appraiser Certification.
-
We also offer testing
for radon gas, water testing, mold testing and in cooperation with
business partners - lead based paint testing and testing for
termites, which in most cases includes a one year warranty.
-
AIS has inspected
numerous homes, shopping centers, churches, schools and office
buildings. AIS also provides: Draw inspections for construction loan
payment approval for financial institutions (pursuant to a draw
schedule); Expert Witness Testimony on a wide range of construction
related fields/issues; Phase I Environmental Impact Studies and
Reserve Studies for Home Owner’s Associations.
-
The newest AIS
venture is assisting individuals with indoor air and/or domestic
quality water supply issues with air and water purification systems.
